Consecration of the Deities: A Celebration of Devotion, Faith and Service
The period from 12 to 16 April 2000 holds a special place in the history of Shri Varshney Mandir. After the sanctum and the spacious first-floor hall were completed, the temple’s volunteers resolved to consecrate the white-marble deities carved by skilled artisans from Jaipur. These included Yogiraj Shri Krishna, Shri Lakshmi-Narayan, Shri Sita-Ram-Lakshman-Hanuman and other deities. The ceremony became a symbol of spiritual devotion, community service and the cultural unity of the Varshney community.
Five Days of Religious Celebrations
Preparations began in January 2000, and committees were formed to coordinate the programme. From 12 to 16 April, the celebrations included worship, a sacred urn procession, Vedic yajna, Krishna Leela performances, gatherings with saints, a city procession, devotional music and cultural programmes. The temple, its approach and nearby venues were decorated with flowers, festoons and colourful lights.
Ganesh Puja and Kalash Procession
The programme began on the auspicious occasion of Shri Ram Navami with worship of Lord Ganesha and the ceremonial kalash. Women dressed in yellow carried the sacred urns in a procession accompanied by devotional singing, flower showers and prasad distribution.
Yajna and Sacred Adhivasa Rituals
Vedic rites included the preparation of the yajna altars and the ceremonial establishment of the sacred fire. Traditional rituals for the deities included annadhivasa, ghritadhivasa, pushpadhivasa, phaladhivasa, gandhadhivasa and dhupadhivasa.
Procession of the Deities Through the City
Decorated palanquins and chariots carried the deities of Shri Krishna, Shri Ram Darbar, Shri Lakshmi-Narayan, Maa Durga and others through the city. Devotees welcomed the procession with flower showers and joined in devotional songs.
Consecration, First Adornment and Maha Aarti
On the final day, the consecration was completed after yajna and Vedic rituals. The first adornment, offering of bhog and community feast followed. A large gathering of devotees joined the evening maha aarti.
A City United in Devotion
The procession on 15 April was one of the highlights of the celebrations. A chariot carrying a model of the temple and another associated with Shri Akroorji Maharaj drew particular attention. Decorated palanquins represented many deities. Main roads and markets were adorned with ceremonial arches, flowers and lights, while residents welcomed the procession with flowers and refreshments for participants.
Parking, lighting, sound and seating arrangements were made for visitors arriving from Aligarh and elsewhere. Events were spread across different venues to accommodate the crowds, and volunteers helped maintain order along the route.
Krishna Leela, Saints and Cultural Programmes
Krishna Leela performances were staged for three consecutive evenings at the basketball ground of Shri Varshney College. Scenes of the divine raas, peacock dance, Braj Holi and Krishna and Balaram’s journey to Mathura moved the audience. Saints and scholars spoke about dharma, good conduct, Indian culture and social harmony. A devotional night and an all-India humour poetry gathering added to the cultural character of the celebrations.
In Hindu tradition, pran-pratishtha is a sacred consecration ceremony performed through Vedic chants, worship, yajna and nyasa. It formally establishes the deity in the temple, after which regular worship, darshan, offerings, adornment and aarti become part of the temple’s devotional tradition.
A Lasting Memory of Service and Community
The success of the five-day celebration was made possible by the acharyas, saints, donors, volunteers, public officials and members of the community. Their collective service made the occasion memorable. The consecration of 16 April 2000 remains an important chapter in the history of Shri Varshney Mandir and a lasting reminder of shared faith, dedication and cultural heritage.
The consecration reminds us that a temple is not only a place of worship; it is also a centre for service, values, cooperation and the shared faith that brings a community together.
