Shri Krishna
Yashoda’s beloved and Devaki’s son, Krishna has been worshipped in Indian society for centuries. He is a many-sided hero whose life offers lessons in maintaining a positive outlook even in adverse circumstances.
A plot against Krishna’s life was formed even before his birth, and being born in a prison was a tragic beginning. Yet, despite these adverse circumstances, Nandalala, the son of Vasudeva, embraced life with energy and enthusiasm; his life story is remembered in many forms.
Natvar Nagar Krishna embodies qualities associated with humanity, divinity, yogic wisdom and sainthood. In the Mahabharata, he places his faith in action. As the cowherd of Gokul and beloved of Braj, he shows that protecting dharma sometimes requires duty to take precedence over close relationships, whether with Kansa or the Kauravas and Pandavas. Practising the Gita’s emphasis on action can help deepen our own awareness.
Krishna’s life spans two poles: the flute, with its music of creation, joy, sweetness and rasa; and the conch, associated with the pain and bitterness of war. Their contrast reminds us that joy and sorrow coexist. Krishna’s story is not only an account of a distant age or divine incarnation, but also an emotional identity of the Yamuna plains: Yashoda’s playful child, Draupadi’s protector, the beloved of the gopis and Sudama’s friend. His life embraces many human emotions.
Matki-breaking competitions held on the birthday of Makhanchor Nandkishore teach, through play, how to stay balanced while working toward a goal; balance and concentration are foundations of a fulfilling life. Celebrating the birthday of Madhusudan, wielder of the discus and source of creativity, inspires enthusiasm and a more creative outlook on life.
